With Wiggins having triumphed in the Tour of Britain, and the 2013 UCI Road World Championships complete, it’s about time to start looking forward to what’s store for the remainder of the cycling calendar.
Despite the weather taking a cold turn there’s still so much going on in terms of cycling over the autumn-winter period. As such, we have collected together four of the very best cycling events from around the world still to take place this year. If you’re serious about cycling, then these events are where you should be during the last few months of 2013.
BGC Cycle Philippines: 15th – 17th November
The Philippines have seen a huge surge in the popularity of cycling recently, and this fact is being honoured with a huge mass-participation cycling event. Bonifacio Global City have partnered with Sunrise Events to launch the Philippines as a prime location in the 2013 Cycle Asia Event.
Located in the gorgeous capital city of Manila, the race will take contestants through some of the city’s most lauded landmarks, and is billed as offering a completely unique view of ‘The City of Man’. By combing all categories and skill groups of cyclists, the event becomes an enjoyable and fun activity that allows you to soak up the sights whilst also enjoying the thrill of the race.
Starting from November 17th, the fifth official UCI tour of Rwanda will take riders on an enticing journey through the heart of central Africa. Cyclists have eight days to pedal their hardest along the exotic roads of Nyabugogo and Musanze, all the way to the republic’s capital, Kigali.
As they travel the testing 819km (509 miles), cyclists will have to deal with seven stages through the scorching Africa heat of up to 27 degrees. This hasn’t seemed to put anyone off though, this year they’ll be a record 16 teams competing for the much coveted yellow jersey, which was won in 2012 by the South African Darren Lill.
Wiggle Wight Winter Sportive: 1st December
If all these events abroad have got you longing for something a little closer to home, then this next event will have you pleased as (Christmas) pudding. As we edge our way into December and the weather starts to get colder, it’s nice to know that the snowy season hasn’t put an end to your cycling fun.
The Isle of Wight is hosting its very own winter sportive, as they believe that the winter weather shouldn’t stop you from riding your heart out. A nice and short route, the event starts and finishes nice and close to the Yarmouth ferry terminal, meaning that those who come from afar haven’t got far to go when they need to get back.
With breath-taking Cliffside views across the English Channel and plenty of facilities for those who need to replenish their energy or stock up on supplies, this is the perfect event for those who want to wind down the sports-filled year in a festive and enjoyable manner.
Dawn To Dusk Arizona: 14th December
If a winter-themed sportive is a little too soft for your tastes and you fancy something slightly more extreme then look no further than the all-American Dawn To Dusk event sponsored by Chipotle Mexican Grill in Arizona. The endurance mountain bike race covers 10 hours of hardcore riding across the exhilarating Pemberton trail in the renowned McDowell Mountain Regional Park.
A testing 16 mile course across one of North America’s largest and hottest deserts, with its wonderfully diverse ecology and incredibly varied geology, will be sure to weed out the casual riders from the mountain biking purists.
Spaces are limited so if you’re interested make sure you apply as soon as possible.
